What to do · व्रत विधि
- Bath early and offer water and black sesame (til) to the ancestors (tarpan).
- Feed cows, crows, dogs and the needy; light a lamp under a peepal tree in the evening.
- On Somvati Amavasya, married women circle the peepal tree 108 times; on Shani Amavasya, offer mustard oil to Shani dev.
Rule used: Listed on the day Amavasya prevails at sunrise (udaya tithi), used for snan, daan and tarpan. Shraddha rituals look at the afternoon (aparahna), which can move them a day earlier.
