About Ekadashi · एकादशी

The eleventh lunar day of each fortnight, sacred to Shri Vishnu. Devotees fast (nirjala, phalahar or without grains) from sunrise on Ekadashi and break the fast (parana) on Dwadashi morning. Each of the 24 Ekadashis has its own name and story.

How to observe · विधि

  • Eat sattvic food on Dashami and avoid rice from Dashami evening.
  • On Ekadashi: bath, Vishnu puja with tulsi, chant ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’, read the Ekadashi katha; fast without grains and beans.
  • Break the fast in the parana window next morning, ideally with tulsi water and a simple meal; do not break it during Hari Vasara.

Rule used: Ekadashi is observed on the day it prevails at sunrise (udaya tithi). Parana is next morning after sunrise, once Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi) has passed and before Dwadashi ends. We show a simple window: from sunrise (or the end of Hari Vasara, if later) to 3h 20m after sunrise or the end of Dwadashi, whichever comes first. Computed from actual Sun and Moon positions (Lahiri ayanamsa) for Delhi, IST. Month names are purnimanta (North India); in amanta calendars (Gujarat, Maharashtra, South India) krishna-paksha dates carry the previous month's name.

FAQ · सवाल-जवाब

Why is rice avoided on Ekadashi?

By tradition grains, especially rice, are not eaten on Ekadashi; the fast is kept with fruit, milk, sabudana, kuttu or singhara, or nirjala (without water) for the strong-willed.

What if Ekadashi is on two days?

When Ekadashi touches two sunrises, Smarta households usually fast on the first day and Vaishnava (ISKCON) devotees on the second. We list the first sunrise day.

What is parana and Hari Vasara?

Parana is breaking the fast on Dwadashi morning. Hari Vasara is the first quarter of Dwadashi; the fast should not be broken during it. Parana after Dwadashi has ended is considered a lapse.
